TUCKED AWAY ON an otherwise unremarkable street in Waterford City is a bright, bold mural of a tiger bearing its teeth.
The piece appeared in August 2017 as part of the third instalment of the city’s Waterford Walls festival, which sees street artists from all over the world paint murals on the city’s walls.
It has rapidly become one of the standout artworks from the festival and one of the most photographed sights in the city.
The piece was painted by South Africa-based street artist Sonny and is entitled Electric Fury. He has painted several murals around the world as part of a series called To The Bone, which is aimed at highlighting the plight of wild animals and raising awareness of their dwindling populations.
Murals include a haunting painting of a polar bear in Miami and a portrait of a rhino in London.
In painting the tiger in Waterford, his aim was to draw attention to the fact that just 4,000 tigers exist in the wild.
According to his website, he plans on donating a portion of the proceeds from the artwork to IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) to aid with their conservation projects.
Yet another reason for Waterfordians to love their county.
